ESF Legacy Event - Centre for Agricultural and Rural Sustainability (CARS) 6th Postgraduate Symposium

Date: 19 June 2015

Venue: Newquay Campus, Cornwall College

The the 6th CARS Postgraduate Symposia, entitled “Land-based Researcher Development: Interfaces with Conservation and the Natural Environment”, was organised between Plymouth University and Duchy College.  These symposia are a key vehicle to engage the ResM students enrolled at Duchy College with the wider PhD and Masters community at Plymouth in the field of Agriculture and Rural Sustainability.  

ESF Legacy Event - Workshop for Potential ResM Supervisors

An ESF Legacy Event workshop designed for research supervisors or potential research supervisors, which was delivered by Prof Mick Fuller, Head of Graduate School at Plymouth University. 

Responsible development imperatives in mining

A guest lecture given by Dr Anthony Hodge, President, International Council on Mining & Metals. The event was arranged and facilitated by ESF PDRA Dr Edvard Glücksman from the ESI, University of Exeter.

A public panel discussion presented by The Mine Water Working Group, featuring Kim-Marie Clothier Director, North Coast Consulting Ltd; Nick Coppin Director, Ulex Consulting Ltd; Steve Hill Principal Technical Adviser, The Coal Authority and Frances Wall Associate Professor in Applied Mineralogy, CSM, University of Exeter. This event was arranged and facilitated by ESF PDRA Dr Edvard Glücksman from the ESI, University of Exeter.

This event provided an insight into some of the exciting research currently being undertaken by Cornwall’s PhD researchers and their business collaborators. It also provided an opportunity to find out how to get involved with future research projects. 

MSc research project showcase

This event provided an opportunity to discover more about the research conducted by MSc students from the College of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Exeter Penryn Campus and how collaborative MSc projects are benefitting local businesses.

Presenting research to non-specialists: PechaKucha workshop

Agri-science into practice

This event was aimed at continuing the process of research capacity building through a visit to the BBSRC sponsored research institute at North Wyke. North Wyke are a partner in the Peninsula Partnership for the Rural Environment and their recently commissioned Farm Platform is a resource available for research and applied agricultural practice studies applicable to the whole of the south-west peninsula.

The Peninsula Environment and Human Health forum

Date: 23 January 2014

Venue: Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre, Truro

This event featured presentations from the European Centre for Environment and Human Health’s PhD programme, which is funded by the ESF Convergence programme and has been working very closely with Cornish businesses. The event also featured an overview of the latest research in environment and health, including a study on pharmaceuticals and the environment.

Good supervision workshop

This workshop was designed to enable supervisors to become more aware of the changing nature and context of postgraduate research degrees and to reflect on their supervisory practice.

Centre for Agricultural and Rural Sustainability annual conference

Venue: Duchy College

This conference drew over fifty delegates from both around the region and internationally. Professor Tom Humphries from the University of Liverpool’s Vet School delivered a fascinating plenary lecture on food poisoning and its impact on sustainable chicken production. A number of research students also delivered short summaries of their current work.

AIRtight - 80,000 words in three minutes!

Falmouth University PhD students took up the challenge of presenting their thesis to a mixed audience in just three minutes. Priority in the event was given to ESF funded students from across the region who have links to the creative sector.

Marine crustacean stock enhancement in the UK: measuring impact

This collaborative event between the University of Exeter, Plymouth University and the National Lobster Hatchery invited researchers and experts to share knowledge, and gave delegates an overview of previous assessment technologies as well as examining the potential for using new genetic tools.
